PEOPLE POWER FOR FLORIDA ANNOUNCES FAMU ORGANIZING BOOTCAMP

Our mission is to engage students and empower them to organize at their HBCU

[Tallahassee, FL - November 1st, 2023] Today, Rep. Anna V. Eskamani announced that People Power For Florida (PPFF) will host an Organizing Bootcamp – a workshop to train students how to build power and engage their communities – on November 12th at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) as their final training of the year.

Since the start of 2023, People Power for Florida has hosted four organizing bootcamps across the state at UCF, FSU, UF, and most recently FIU in Miami. This will be the first organizing bootcamp hosted at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in PPFF’s history.

The attacks on higher education, diverse curriculum, cultural RSOs, and Black History through bills like HB999/SB266 that passed during the latest legislative session make it clear that students need resources, tools, and knowledge to organize and activate their networks in the face of racism and bigotry. With intentional conversations about power, leadership, and the role students play in shaping their government, PPFF hopes to inspire and engage FAMU students to take action ahead of the 2024 legislative session and upcoming Presidential Election.

During the Organizing Bootcamp, students will also hear from guest speakers that will share their experience and knowledge with students–including State Senator Shevrin Jones, Rich Templin of the AFL-CIO, Planned Parenthood’s Melanie Williams, lobbyist Pamela Burch Fort, and activist Marie Rattigan.

“We are thrilled to be bringing our youth organizing bootcamp to the illustrious and historic FAMU,” said Representative Anna V. Eskamani. “We are inspired by the next generation of young leaders and are honored to help prepare them for a future of civic engagement and political power. Together we can build collective efficacy that creates meaningful change.”

In 2022, People Power for Florida collected 5,013 voter registration forms and nearly 9,000 forms since its inception in 2021. In 2023, People Power Florida plans to continue registering voters and expanding its mission to become a leading source for Florida-specific voter education.
